In 1992 I commenced a career in nursing. During this time surgery, cancer and palliative care were the background of my whole career. I spent around ten years working in Intensive Care, covering every aspect of medicine and surgery for all types of problems and illnesses, and fortunate to see and look after transplant patients for heart, lung, liver and renal problems, and trauma. A lot of the work that I gained experience in was trauma in varying degrees. Most of my career in nursing was in the Birmingham area, and I worked in north, south, east and west of Birmingham. Whilst working in South Birmingham I gained experience working on a unit where the military returned their injured personnel from war zones. It has since developed considerably.
During my time in Intensive Care, I maintained an interest in Cancer and Palliative care, and learned a huge amount about the patients’ journey. As a result of this, I spent some time working in both hospice and palliative care units. It was here that the philosophy behind palliative care became apparent, to live until you die. The main emphasis was on life and symptom control as originally started by Dame Cicely Saunders with the palliative care movement. Often there would be Complementary Therapists working with the patients and it was then that I became fascinated by what was achieved by the patients and their families receiving the treatments, and so my training began.
After spending nearly twenty years in the NHS, I decided to leave my post as a Senior Sister and pursue a career in Complementary Therapy. Throughout my nursing career, I qualified as a teacher clinically and in a class room environment, teaching people from age sixteen plus. Clinically I taught from consultant through to Health Care Assistants. Recently I have taught at the Bristol School of Holistic Therapies, and I am now a tutor there for the Bach Flower Remedies course.
Over the last eight years I have been studying and working as a Complementary Therapist, all of the courses have given me at least a level 3 diploma and registration to governing bodies. I am now an experienced practitioner for Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Massage, Bach Flower Remedies and Thermal Auricular Therapy. I work with any age from young children through to adults and the elderly, looking after people with all manner of health issues and problems. If you would like to talk to me about a concern that you may have, I would be delighted to hear from you.
More recently although I work with children anyway, I have been working as an Instructor for the Massage In Schools Programme where I teach primary age children a massage routine to do on each other in the classroom. This has proved to be successful and I really enjoy working with the children. Additionally I am also qualified to care for children on the autistic spectrum with Bach Flower Remedies and Functional Reflexology. If you would like further information please do contact me. My treatment room remains above Naturally Nature shop in Corsham where I have been working since 2012.
